Behind the grit chamber in a wastewater treatment plant, wet grit constantly needs to be hauled away. As a highly efficient Grit Classifier Screw, it uses a centerless shaft design built specifically to handle heavy, abrasive materials. Without a central shaft in the way, grit-water mixtures containing fibers won't tangle or clog. The inclined upper section also drains water, letting the grit partially dewater before dropping into the bin.
Get a QuoteWorking Principle
Material enters the U-trough from the bottom inlet and gets pushed forward directly by the rotating spiral blades. If debris like rags comes through, the lack of a central shaft keeps it from twisting into a tangled ball—it just gets pushed straight along. Water drains back through the gaps at the bottom, while the heavy grit is pushed uphill, dewatered, and finally dropped at the outlet.
Application Fields
1.Municipal wastewater plants: dewatering and transporting grit-water mixtures from grit chambers.
2.Food waste plants: conveying dewatered kitchen residue.
3.Paper and pulp mills: transporting wet pulp rejects with long fibers.
4.Slaughterhouses: conveying screen debris and greasy solid waste.
FAQ
Q1: Do the spiral blades on this equipment wear out easily?
A: They do experience some wear since grit is highly abrasive. To extend their lifespan, the blades are usually made of high-manganese steel or surface-sprayed with tungsten carbide. The U-trough liner is also often fitted with replaceable wear plates.
Q2: What if too much grit builds up and the equipment can't move it?
A: It's equipped with a torque limiter or overload protection system. If a sudden surge in feed causes excessive resistance, the system will automatically shut down or sound an alarm to prevent motor burnout or shaft breakage.
Q3: Why does the Grit Classifier Screw have to be shaftless?
A: Shafted screws tend to jam when conveying heavy grit. The shaftless design removes the central shaft blockage, giving the material a larger passage. This completely prevents fiber tangling and heavy grit jamming.
